The surface of water, film grain, and the search for the perfect neg scan

I choose to have grain in my images. I use Rodinal as my developer to help feed my love of grain. Grain with Rodinal, pretty much irrespective of the film stock, is delicious, tight, defined and sumptuous. The subjects I choose to photograph tend to benefit from grain, like the puddles, I love expanses of shades of grey.

But mushy grain is grim so I’m on a constant journey to find an easy to use and very high quality neg digitisation process. This article is about my current place on this seemingly never ending journey.
